The Gustavian is probably the style most closely associated with the Swedish style today. Known for its clean, simple lines and a muted color palette Gustavian furniture fits in with most interiors from the formal to the country home.

Contrary to common perception authentic Gustavian furniture can be painted or dark wood. Dark Gustavian pieces consist of high quality veneered alder and birch root tilt top tables, chests of drawers and even console tables. Painted furniture was more common in the provincial areas and gilded or dark furniture was more prevalent in the city palaces and stately homes.
